Welcome to Mrs K Warwick's EMLAS page

Those children entering our school who speak English as a second language are referred to the EMLAS (Ethnic Minority Language and Achievement Service). A qualified EMLAS teacher will then assess the English language learning needs of that child. Where necessary a child will receive in class support and advice will be given to their class teacher on suitable strategies to help them access the curriculum. Each child's progress is monitored closely and support adjusted accordingly.

The role of the EMLAS teacher is not only

to raise the achievement of Ethnic Minority pupils but also to help promote awareness of their cultural and linguistic background within the school. This has been found not only to increase the confidence of individual pupils but also to generate understanding, tolerance and respect from all pupils.

The service can also provide, if able, Bilingual Teacher Assistants, to support home language in the classroom as well as develop a home school link.
